Enjoy great walks along the shores of Loch Lomond; do some climbing in the Cairngorms, the Grampian mountains, where you will find Ben Nevis, the highest peak in Britain, or the Arrochar Alps; stroll along the pristine rivers and lochs, full of wild salmon and trout. Scotland has a rich and colourful history. Stone circles, thought to date back 5, years, are scattered across Scotland’s islands. Etymology[ edit ] The origin of the name Glasgow is disputed. The settlement probably had an earlier Cumbric name, Cathures; the modern name appears for the first time in the Gaelic period , as Glasgu. It is also recorded that the King of Strathclyde , Rhydderch Hael , welcomed Saint Kentigern also known as Saint Mungo , and procured his consecration as bishop about For some thirteen years Kentigern laboured in the region, building his church at the Molendinar Burn where Glasgow Cathedral now stands, and making many converts.
A large community developed around him and became known as Glasgu often glossed as “the dear Green” or “dear green place”.

Share2 Shares 8K The Scotland of the imagination is a land of rolling green hills, kilt-wearing bagpipers, and crumbling castles. While you can find all of this in Scotland, there is a great deal more to this fiercely patriotic country. With a land area equal to the state of Maine in the US, this small country is chock-full of fascinating history. Experts speculate that the tree may be 5, years old. It is named for the small village in which it is found—Fortingall, in Perthshire.
The land surrounding Fortingall contains some of the most amazing archaeological sites in Scotland, from plague burial grounds to the remains of a 1, year-old monastery. The Fortingall Yew is significant not just because of its age, but because of the intriguing folklore surrounding this ancient living entity. Yews are part of the landscape at countless British churches—many times the trees were planted at the same time as the church was founded.
The Fortingall Yew predates its sister chapel by thousands of years, leading experts to believe that it was an important site for pagan rituals long before Christianity came to Perthshire. It was common practice for early Christians to build over sacred groves and other existing religious sites in order to promote the dominance of their own religion.

A radical scheme to give every citizen a universal basic income UBI , regardless of whether or not they work, is set to be piloted by two Scottish councils this year. Labour-run Glasgow and Fife councils are designing trial schemes following meetings held late last year. It has not yet been announced what level the basic income will be set at, but the councils are to proceed with the pilots, subject to sufficient funding being secured.
Any money earned above this is subject to taxation. Matt Kerr, a Labour councillor and key force behind the issue, says his investigations into poverty convinced him a basic income was the right step forward. Jamie Cooke, head of think tank the Royal Society of Arts RSA in Scotland, which carried out research into the scheme, attended a meeting with Fife Council about the idea, which is said to have received enthusiastic support.
Mr Cooke said afterwards:

There are some hills and ridges which have been absorbed as the town has expanded. Oakshaw is a conservation area , and on the high ground many of Paisley’s significant buildings can be found, such as the High Kirk , the Coats Observatory and the former John Neilson Institution, which was once a school and is now converted into residential flats. Around the centre there are a large number of older residential buildings. The town centre, Whitehaugh, Seedhill and Charleston areas contain many examples of Scottish tenement flats.
Three to four storeys tall, with shops on the ground floor and constructed of local pale and red sandstone , these tenement flats have been extensively restored and modernised over the last two decades[ when? Paisley expanded steadily, particularly in the Victorian and Edwardian eras , creating many suburbs. Castlehead is a wooded conservation area primarily made up of Victorian villas where many of the town’s leading industrialists made their homes in the late 19th century.
Thornly Park is another conservation area, to the south of the town, just off Neilston Road heading towards Barrhead. It contains a variety of architecture ranging from mock Tudor to Art Deco.
