It offers a beautiful view of the mountains to the west and out over the eastern plains. Chatfield Lake is a large horseshoe-shaped body of water with many different areas for all kinds of activities to enjoy. There are four separate large campgrounds that can accommodate any size RV. The camp sites here are spaced well and each one offers its own water, power and even dump connections for motor homes and trailers.
There are nice sized trees between the camp sites, giving each one a measure of privacy. One nice thing about the camp sites here at Chatfield state park is the shorter fire rings. Because the rings are low to the ground, the heat from the fire radiates to those sitting around the fire instead of going straight up, as it tends to do with the taller fire rings. The grills are mounted to the fire rings, and can be pulled up out of the way.

We were really looking forward to this campground. The website certainly indicates a lovely place to stay along the river. First of all, the entrance off Route 66 is a steep one-lane drive, so be prepared. The campground is not very large and it is very congested, so when you get to the bottom of the drive, stop before you go any further. The people who work here are very nice.

The campground had lots of openings and I had reserved only the day before. I selected Spearfish because I could rent a car close by but rather expensive , and after checking in and parking in my site I walked the mile or so to the Enterprise Car Rental office. The sites are very close together, probably because this is right in the mouth of Spearfish Canyon and space is quite limited. Sites are generally back to back, with power, water and sewer being bunched together and paired up between the sites.
There are lots of trees, probably too many as I had to be extremely careful backing into my site because of the large trees on either side right at the road. I found the campground well maintained and the showers and restrooms were very clean, but there were some quirks.
